Featureless Rifle Configurations Under California Law

Assault WeaponsFeatureless

California Penal Code Section 30515[1] defines a semiautomatic centerfire rifle with a detachable magazine as an assault weapon if it also has any one of six prohibited features. A "featureless" rifle is one configured to have none of these features, allowing it to be legally possessed with a standard detachable magazine.

The Six Prohibited Features

Under Section 30515(a)(1), a semiautomatic centerfire rifle with a detachable magazine is an assault weapon if it has any of the following:

  • Pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action: The most commonly encountered feature. To go featureless, owners replace the standard pistol grip with a fin grip, Kydex wrap, or similar device that prevents the thumb from wrapping around the grip. Alternatively, a rifle with a traditional stock design (such as a Mini-14 or M1A) naturally lacks this feature.
  • Thumbhole stock: A stock with a hole through which the shooter's thumb passes. Featureless builds use stocks without thumbhole openings.
  • Folding or telescoping stock: The stock must be fixed in a single position. Adjustable stocks must be pinned or replaced with a fixed-length stock.
  • Grenade launcher or flare launcher: These attachments are prohibited. Most civilian rifles do not have them.
  • Flash suppressor: Any device designed, intended, or that functions to perceptibly reduce or redirect muzzle flash. Muzzle brakes and compensators that do not suppress flash are generally permissible. The California DOJ has not published a definitive list of approved muzzle devices, so owners should evaluate whether a device meets the statutory definition.
  • Forward pistol grip: A grip that allows the shooter to grasp the firearm forward of the trigger with the pistol-style hand position. Angled foregrips set at less than 90 degrees to the bore axis are generally considered compliant, though no statutory safe harbor exists.

Building a Featureless Rifle

To configure a featureless AR-pattern rifle, owners typically:

  • Install a fin grip or Sparrow Dynamics-style grip to eliminate the pistol grip feature
  • Pin the stock in a fixed position or install a fixed stock
  • Replace any flash suppressor with a muzzle brake or compensator
  • Remove any forward vertical grip

With all six features eliminated, the rifle retains a standard detachable magazine and can accept standard-capacity (10-round) magazines without additional modification.

Advantages and Disadvantages

The primary advantage of a featureless build is the ability to use a standard magazine release, allowing fast magazine changes. The primary disadvantage is reduced ergonomics, particularly the loss of a traditional pistol grip, which affects comfort and control. Many shooters find the fin grip acceptable for range use but less practical for home defense scenarios.
